Not a bad question -
Inside the carburator on your bike are a couple of tiny passage ways that gasoline must pass through in order to be controlled as to the amount of gasoline being sucked into the engine. These passage ways are called " jets" or "carb jets"

These passage ways have to be adjustable for tuning of the engine - at the simplist level if you live at a higher altitude you need a different jet than if you live at sea level - other wise the engine will be getting to little fuel.

The manufactures make the jets replacable inside the carb - usually they are made of brass with the tiny hole drilled through them. They screw into place inside the carburator body.

Good not to mess with the jets to much unless you have a plan and know what the changes will do - because it is easy to get your engine receiving to much or to little fuel by changing the jet size ( the size of the tiny passage way) to either to large or to small.

To large and your engine gets to much gas and will backfire and woof like mad - in effect the engine is getting to much gas - running to rich and will not perform correctly.

To small and your engine does not get enough gasoline again it make backfire a lot - in effect this time the engine is not getting enough gasoline - running to lean and again will not perform correctly - but this time with the added bonus that you will be running your engine hotter than it should and you may burn one of your exhaust valves .

Hope this helps
